About dienka
dienka is the contemporary art practice of Johannesburg-born South African artist Nadine Vessey.
With a background in graphic design and a lifelong connection to visual expression, Nadine approaches painting through a considered balance of form, colour, composition and texture. Her work sits between the structured language of design and the instinctive freedom of contemporary painting, creating artworks that feel both intentional and expressive.
Nadine’s relationship with art began as a child, when drawing and creating became a natural way for her to explore the world around her. Although her creative path later led her into graphic design, art remained a constant thread beneath the surface.
It was through her own journey of recovery and rebuilding that Nadine found her way back to painting. Returning to something she had loved since childhood became more than a creative pursuit — it became a way of reconnecting with herself, finding stillness, and creating something meaningful from a new chapter of her life.
Today, that personal journey sits quietly beneath the work. Her paintings are not intended to tell a literal story of recovery, but they carry a sense of movement, renewal and possibility.
Working primarily with acrylic and mixed-media techniques, Nadine explores simplified forms, intersecting lines, layered surfaces and bold colour relationships. Her compositions are often reduced to their essential elements, allowing shape, space and colour to carry the visual conversation.
There is a quiet tension between order and spontaneity within her work. Clean geometric structures meet organic movement, while moments of texture and imperfection bring a sense of humanity to otherwise refined compositions.
Nadine’s design background strongly influences her approach to art. She considers proportion, balance, negative space and colour with the same attention she brings to a visual identity, while the physical process of painting allows for something less controlled — a place where intuition can take over.
The result is contemporary work that is both visually considered and deeply personal — created to become part of the spaces and stories of the people who collect it.
Based in South Africa, Nadine creates each work in her studio with a focus on craftsmanship, considered materials and a distinctly contemporary visual language.
